Taking a holiday to Majorca and staying in the old town of Alcudia

Majorca is one of the most popular holiday destinations because of its beautiful, pristine beaches and fantastic nightlife. For those who prefer to avoid the fast-paced holiday lifestyle in the southern resorts, Alcudia on the northern coast is a splendid alternative for a short, relaxing visit or family holiday.

The main tourist centre on the north of the island, it is a large resort and very popular with families. Most of the hotels are on the 14 km beach. The Old Town of Alcudia has Roman and Moorish influences and dates from the 13th century. It is surrounded by a medieval wall with a majestic gate that is on the Alcudia Coat of Arms. The Old Town is only for pedestrians and is one of the most visited places on Majorca.

There are several Roman archaeological sites that date from the second century BC with lay outs of a forum and temples. There is also a Roman theatre from the first century AD.

Puerto Alcudia is the main resort with one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean. There is an abundance of water sports in Alcudia including scuba diving. Scuba Majorca will pick up visitors from their hotels and take them to the best diving spots. They give instructions and welcome beginners as well as experts. Visitors can also wind surf, hire boats, learn sailing and kayaking. The Puerto Alcudia beach has bars as well as lifeguards the whole length of the beach.

Playa de Muro also has a good beach connected to Puerto Alcudia as well as S’Albufera which is a large nature park. The Natural Park S’Albufera is a protected area that faces the bay of Alcudia and is the most important eco system among the Balearic and Pitiuse Islands. It has canals, bridges, rushes with eels and birds and is a relaxing place for walking or bicycling.

There are also several theme parks for children recommended by IndoBet88 including:

  • El Laberinto Maze Fun Park full of mazes, monsters, clowns and magicians
  • Hidropark and Super Golf with water slides, chutes and pools as well as a 54-hole golf course
  • Kartingmania which is a huge karting track open at nine in the morning until late at night with floodlit night karting

North of the Alcudia harbour area is one of Majorca’s newest golf courses. It is right on the edge of the Mediterranean with fantastic views of the Bay of Alcudia and Alcanada Island. It is a par 72 course and if players reserve in advance they get a 10 per cent reduction on green fees.

There are markets in Alcudia on Tuesdays and Sundays that sell fresh local fruit and vegetables as well as baked goods, flowers and crafts. They open at 8:00 am and are usually crowded, but worth seeing at least once during a holiday. Bargaining is expected.

Alcudia caters to English speaking visitors with a large choice of bars and restaurants. Local dishes including excellent seafood as well as other Mediterranean cuisine is available. There are many restaurants that serve a full English breakfast as well as other English favourites.
